College days....

Well today is historic in our family for two reasons... the first is the previous post - Dawn & I celebrate 19 years. The second - Garhett started College today.

These little ones grow up so fast - OK so it is only Junior College - Cypress College at that - but it is College none-the-less. He is a 'special admit' student because he is still a Junior in High School (only 15) but he has started his college career already.

His first class is trigonometry. He took the placement exam and scored in the upper 56% of all the students taking the math placement class. The professor who administered the class, the counselor he had to meet with for entrance and the Dean all said that they were very impressed that a 15 year old was able to score higher than nearly 1/2 of all the students who took the test - the majority of which are 18+ years older and high school graduates.

Here is the best part - the special admit program allows students in high school to take classes for FREE - yes, FREE.

Second best part - if Garhett keeps up with his regular studies as well as the general education requirements for Cypress he would be able to graduate his senior year in high school with his Associates Degree as well. or at the very least just have to take 1 or 2 more classes at Cypress to get the degree.

We are so proud of our little boy - Oh, did I mention that he is homeschooled! Yep, score another point for homeschooling - a 15 year old homeschooler scoring higher than nearly 1/2 of high school graduates on the college level mathematics placement exam. Nice!

That's very exciting! I've worked with homeschooled kids when I was an admission counselor at Hope and most of the time they are definitely ahead of the game!

But as an employee and graduate of Cerritos College, I must say that they are no longer referred to as "junior" colleges. They are "community" colleges. I'll forgive you this time...just don't let it happen again :-)
